Vysoká Lhota Chateau

The castle was first mentioned in the time of Charles IV around 1358. Until the 18th century it was used by the owners as a residence. After that, however, it was used as a warehouse and gradually fell into disrepair. Today it is home to the Museum of Carriages, Harnesses and Horse Saddles, which offers you the chance to see carriages, harnesses and accessories from many Czech and foreign films and fairy tales. With a guide, you will see the 11th century cellar, which houses a period execution room. During the tour you will visit the saddle room of film period saddles and harnesses, carriage accessories and lamps. The saddle room also includes a corner dedicated to Bob Hurikán, the founder of tramping on the Sázava River.

Next, you will see a part of the hunting lodge, which was the property of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand d'Este. However, the history of the chateau dates back to the 11th century, which is also documented by the exhibition in the chateau kitchen, where you will see the oven with a black kitchen and period utensils from the 16th century. The exhibition is complemented by historical maps, findings from archaeological excavations around the castle and photographs from the filming of films and fairy tales we have been involved in.

The tour includes a visit to the coach house, where carriages from the films are on display. For example, the carriage of Princess Bathory from Jakubiskov's film or the gothic carriage that starred in the historical film Jan Žižka. From the guide you will learn about the development and use of carriages, but also the legends that are connected to the castle.
